Seven Reasons Why You Need To Cook More This Year

Cooking has a different meaning in each household. For some reheating a can of soup is cooking.  How about putting a frozen pizza in the oven?  Or making mac & cheese from a box is also considered a valid cooking option. Technically, you are “cooking” the food, but our grandmothers would not recognize this as “cooking”.

I personally believe we all need to learn how to cook.  Each and every one of us.  Irrespective of our gender, location and food preferences. Unless you are a celebrity or you can afford to hire a personal chef and a nutritionist, you will have to learn to cook and feed yourself a wholesome meal at least 5 days a week, 20 days a month and 240 days a year. These numbers are based on the 80 – 20 lifestyle rule – 80 % healthy, home cooked food, 20 % take outs. Approximately.

I may not know all the latest food trends for 2022, but I’m very confident that cooking is a great skill to acquire this year for so many wonderful reasons. Through my cooking classes, I have met hundreds of people in the past four and a half years. Some enjoy cooking with family, and for some it’s a great way to learn about a new culture. While some people learn to cook mainly for therapeutic reasons. Some of them have even healed themselves through frequent home cooking.

Feeding ourselves with healthy food is crucial to our well-being and survival. Whether you are just looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle, or shed some weight or even trying to maintain the weight after losing those extra pounds, or recovering from an illness, you need to be able to tailor food to our tastes and body requirements. And you need food that won’t cost you an exorbitant amount.

It all comes down to cooking.

Here are seven benefits of home cooking:

*Cooking allows us to know where our food comes from.

*You can actually boost your immunity through food. While junk food has a reputation of lowering your immunity due to all the added preservatives and sugars, home cooked food can give your immune system a boost.

*It allows us to know what’s in our food. This is so important especially now when supermarkets are shelved with ‘food like’ products. Have you ever read the label of that canned soup or frozen pizza? Jeez !!

*It allows us to use fresher ingredients which are likely to have more nutritive value than the packaged foods. When you use real ingredients , you know exactly what you are eating.

*Home cooked food using real ingredients is just healthier.

*It’s economical too.

*It makes you less dependent on others. Just like you want to be financially independent, make it a point to be self sufficient when it comes to healthy eating/cooking. Trust me, it’s a great feeling!

How Do You Start Your Cooking Journey?

Just do it everyday.

Cook something easy. Pick up a recipe which uses less then five ingredients.

Make it a priority. Just like when you are learning a new skill, you take out time to practice on that.

Be patient and give yourself some grace if you fail initially. We all start somewhere.

Taking a cooking class is a great way to learn this skill.
