Oil Pulling

Does swishing oil around your mouth for 20 minutes every morning sound cool or gross? What if this practice helps you clear up your skin, improve oral hygiene and whiten your teeth in addition to a slew of other health benefits?

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that has resurfaced in the modern health scape. Swishing oil inside your mouth pulls out bacteria and fungus, which may reduce inflammation, congestion and even allergies.

It is highly recommended to teachers, singers, public speakers or anyone who rely on their voices for their career.

Health benefits

There are numerous health benefits associated with Oil Pulling.

  • It helps strengthen and stabilize jaw and teeth.
  • Reduces gum inflammation, bleeding gums, cavities, gingivitis and plaque.
  • Prevents and counteracts tooth sensitivity.
  • Prevents dryness of mouth, throat and lips.
  • Slows aging as it strengthens facial muscles.
  • It’s one of the most ancient practices to prevent wrinkles.
  • Helps with bad breath.

How to do oil pulling ?

The best time to do oil pulling is on an empty stomach, preferably before breakfast. If you are a singer, teacher or public speaker, you can do it again before bedtime too. You can use coconut oil or sesame oil. Sesame oil feels much lighter than coconut oil but both oils are considered good for oil pulling.

  • Brush your teeth and scrape your tongue using a tongue scraper.
  • Take 1 teaspoon of sesame oil in your mouth. Swish the oil around your teeth and mouth for 3-5 minutes and then spit it out. The goal is to do it for 15-20 minutes in the long run. Start slowly and increase the duration when you are ready.
  • Swish around a small amount of water and spit it out.

Avoid oil pulling if you experience any of these:

  • Stomach issues – constipation, diarrhea
  • Fever, infection, congestion, eye inflammation
  • During monthly periods
  • Excess phlegm
  • Bleeding problems – skin, nose, anus etc.

Although it may sound a bit complex and intimidating, oil pulling is actually one of the simplest self-care measures you can take.
