Kuttu Ki Kadhi / Buckwheat Flour Soup

Navratri is a Hindu festival that honors Divine Mother or Shakti. It is a great time for spiritual cleansing, personal exploration and connecting to your higher self. The nine nights are divided into sets of three, each set a particular aspect of divine mother is meditated upon.

When I first started observing Navratri fasts during college days, it was more for fun, to give company to my mother for her fasting and the delicious foods which we are allowed to eat during these nine days. In the last decade, I learned a lot about this festival and have started taking these nine days as a special opportunity to reconnect with my inner self.

Fasting allows to help reset our digestive system as the weather is transitioning and it serves as a detox – at all levels – spiritual, physical and mental. Fasting also teaches self control especially around food. This also allows us to explore non grain foods which we can eat during the fasting days. I also like that these divine days allow us to focus on our inner strengths, wisdom and strength. It’s like nine days of self care and self love and who would not like that ?

As I mentioned in my previous post that fasting doesn’t mean starving. It is a non grain, egg free and meat free fast which helps to reset our system. Buckwheat flour, also called ‘kuttu’ is a staple flour during this festival and a lot of different recipes are created using this non grain flour. The recipe I’m sharing today is essentially a yogurt based soup prepared using Buckwheat flour. Buckwheat contains all nine essential amino acids, which are our body’s building blocks of protein. It is also rich in fiber, antioxidants, and magnesium. It’s a great soup for those who are gluten sensitive.

The consistency is thin but you can adjust as per your liking. Adjust the amount of water added accordingly. It’s mildly spiced and can be had on its own or with boiled potatoes, sabudana khichdi and kuttu ki roti / buckwheat flour tortillas. Do try this recipe and share your experience in the comments below.

Wishing you all a beautiful rest of your week 🙏
