Navratri or the nine sacred days mark the most auspicious days of the lunar calendar according to Hinduism. Celebrated with fervor and festivity across every Hindu community the world over, these nine days are dedicated solely to Maa Durga (goddess Durga) and her nine avatars.
The primary theme is the celebration of truth over evil. It is celebrated as Garbha-Dandiya, Ramlila, Golu and Durga Pooja in various parts of India. Some Hindus observe fast during Navratri. On the last day they perform puja and break their fast. The nine days of fasting calls for a grain free, egg free and a vegetarian diet.
Fasting doesn’t mean starving. There are hundreds of fasting recipes and you can expect a full course vegetarian meal using non grains, fruit and some vegetables. Onions and garlic are strictly prohibited. There is no batch cooking and food is prepared fresh everyday.
Today I’m sharing an easy recipe using tapioca pearls. The best way to prepare them is soaking them overnight. So when you are hungry, this appetizer comes together in 20 minutes. During navratri fasting, another helpful tip is to have boiled potatoes handy. They are so versatile and can be used in so many different ways. I also keep fresh cilantro and grated ginger ready to be used.
Hope you enjoy this recipe whether you are fasting or not.
Happy Navratri !
