Phyllo Cups

This blog is not a recipe . It’s just an introduction to phyllo cups and how to make these at home. Phyllo cups are versatile and can be filled in with sweet or savory fillings. They are a great party food – can be used as an appetizer or desserts. I will be sharing detailed recipes of different fillings you can use for phyllo cups in my upcoming blogs.

Now you may ask why not use the ready made ones?  The readymade phyllo cups are equally good but I prefer making cups using phyllo pastry sheets. There are two reasons : you can control the size of the pastry cups and secondly they are very economical. I pack of phyllo pastry yields about 5 dozen pastry cups. Once ready, you can store these for upto one week in an air tight container in a refrigerator.

Preparation: 15 minutes

Baking : 12-15 minutes

Ready In: 30 minutes

Serving  Size : 1 cup

You will need:

  • 6 phyllo sheets (about 1/3 of 1 package frozen phyllo dough, thawed)
  • Cooking spray (I used olive oil spray)
  • A muffin pan ( 12 count)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Place a sheet of phyllo dough on parchment paper. Lightly spray with oil, then place another sheet on top. Repeat layering until you have 6 sheets stacked up.
  2. Using a sharp knife or kitchen scissors, cut the stack into 12 equal sized rectangles/pieces.
  3. Put each rectangle into the cups of a muffin pan and press gently.
  4. Bake for about 12 minutes , or until golden brown. Keep an eye on the oven to make sure they don’t overbake. Remove from the oven, let cool for a few minutes. Your phyllo cups are ready to be used!

Some ideas to use these Phyllo Cups:

There are many  ways to use these cups:

Make fruit cups: A very kid friendly recipe where you can fill the cups with some fruit, top with some whipped cream ( optional)  and chocolate sauce.

Dessert Cups: An easy way to use leftover cakes ( if you have any ). Top with some cream cheese or flavored yogurt and chocolate sauce.

Salad Cups : Fill these cups with some veggies like diced cucumber, tomatoes and celery and top with salsa.

Chaat Cups: Fill these with any chaat  and top with some yogurt and chutney. I have realized that Chana Chaat  is the easiest to fill in and the whole cup tastes yummy as the phyllo cup gives the crunch to chana chaat. An easy Chana Chaat recipe can be found here.

Hope you are inspired to make your own phyllo cups.  Do let me know in the comments below if you have any questions.
