Savory Oats Poha / Oats With Flat Rice / Chidwaa

Guest Recipe by Shweta Ahuja

Breakfast – the name itself defines it, break your 12 hour nightly fast. Being the most important meal of the day, it needs to be an equilibrium of nutrients and a pack full of protein. As Indians we can’t really have sweet breakfast like pancakes or muffins or doughnuts nor can we digest raw fruits, so thought of twisting my hubby’s favorite rice flakes poha into a healthier version!

Hence pops the idea of using oats for the savory breakfast poha! The oats poha tastes very similar to regular flattened rice flakes poha. I’ve started making this morning favorite breakfast with half oats and half rice flakes. Oats add much more in terms of nutrition than just the white rice flakes! Lots of antioxidants, fiber, minerals and help stabilize sugar levels and lower cholesterol!

Serves 2
Difficulty level: Medium

Preparation Time: 10 minutes         Cooking Time: 10 minutes
Ready In: 20 minutes                    Course: Breakfast

Directions

Damp the rice flakes (thick Poha 1/2 cup) in water using a sieve ( to avoid sogginess). Add in old fashioned oats(3/4+ cup) to the damp rice flakes, mix and let sit for 2 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat oil ( 1 teaspoon)  in a pan on medium heat. Spread oil to evenly coat pan. Add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds when the oil is hot. As soon as they start to sputter, add a few curry leaves and give it mix. Add few peanuts(optional)  & 3-4 Tbsps diced onion and 1/2 tsp green chilies.
Cook until onions are translucent.Add chopped (boiled) potatoes and some turmeric powder, mix and cook for a minute. Add chopped tomato (1 medium size ) and cook for a minute. Add soaked oats and rice flakes, salt and mix well.

Cook covered on low-medium heat for 3-4 minutes. Open, mix well and cover and cook for another minute. Sprinkle with fresh chopped cilantro and lemon juice and serve hot!I top it with Haldirams bikaneri sev …heavenly!!!!

Serving Suggestions

This dish is so full of flavors that you can eat it by itself. But you may want to enhance the flavor by pairing it with mint sauce or ketchup.
Ideal for breakfast but can be served as an evening snack.

  36. I've not tried this with instant oats but I guess they should go well with this recipe too. Also don't soak them in water for long. Hope this helps !
